We often look to the “experts” when reviewing and researching the best golf courses, so it’s refreshing to pull the data from the “people” to see what they think.
After more than 315,000 reviews in 2022 on GolfPass.com, reviewers have spoken and two Michigan courses were among the top 10 public sites in the US that golfers loved, and six more were among the top 50.
No. 8 was Stonegate Golf Club At Twin Lake, as one reviewer wrote driving an hour “was well worth the trip.”
GolfPass has more on the course: “This tree-lined layout in 2004 Northeast Muskegon made golfers’ choice lists for Michigan’s Top-Rated Courses, as well as Golf’s Friendliest Courses in the United States in 2022, it’s been a hit Big on her stride, she has garnered scores of rave reviews from visiting golfers.”
The green fee at Stonegate is about $72, according to GolfPass.

To be eligible for this list, a golf course must be accessible to the public, and have received at least 10 reviews in the previous year. Reviews incorporate six factors to form the overall rating score: value, conditions, layout, pace of play, friendliness of staff, and off-course amenities.
Number 9 is a cycle you may be more familiar with: Harbor Shores at Benton Harbor, which has hosted five previous PGA Championships and was designed by The Jack Nicklaus Company. (The course was also one of three courses from The Mitten named to Golfweek’s 200 Best Residential Courses).
GolfPass wrote: “Separated together from more than 140 different land purchases as part of a massive industrial reform effort… This is a prime example of how golf can help transform the prospects of a struggling community.”
“The course layout was amazing,” said one reviewer. “Most of the holes were exciting and could be the highlight holes of the course. Great experience.”
GolfPass says the Harbor Shores play fee costs about $195.

The southern course to the Mauna Lani resort on a coastal cove in Waimea, Hawaii ranks first. It seems worth the $268 price tag and the ocean views are hard to beat.
St Ives Golf Club At Tullymore Golf Resort in Stanwood he came 14th, with a cost of nearly $130 per round.
“St. Ives offers a unique experience with a course carved into the Michigan woods, with trees lining nearly all of the first 13 holes,” one user wrote. “Then a little bog golf for variety. The greens are high but reasonably flat, so putting isn’t too hard. … Deer will join your view on the driving range and putting green.”
Perhaps the best heist on the entire list is #16 Old Channel Trail Golf Course in Montague, at a cost of $44 per round. This is a nine-hole layout, par-35 for 3,222 yards.
