The US is expected to reach its debt limit today, according to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, but lawmakers have a few months to negotiate until the government defaults. Set by Congress, it’s the maximum amount the federal government can borrow to fund commitments that lawmakers and presidents have already agreed to. The debt ceiling is currently $31.4 trillion and has been revised more than 100 times since World War II. Once the debt limit is reached, the Treasury will begin implementing extraordinary measures to delay default in order to avoid a financial crisis. Essentially, if the government can no longer borrow, it won’t have enough money to pay all of its bills. That means it will likely have to temporarily delay payments or default on some of its obligations, which could affect Social Security payments, veterans’ benefits and federal employee salaries, among other things.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern unexpectedly announced today that she will resign within weeks, saying she does not believe she has the energy to seek re-election in the October election. In a statement, she said her term will likely end by February 7, when she expects a new Labor prime minister to be sworn in – though it “depends on the process that could be earlier”. When Ardern became prime minister in 2017 at the age of 37, she was New Zealand’s third female leader and one of the youngest in the world. Within a year, she had given birth in office – the second world leader ever to do so. She is also a former DJ and a lapsed Mormon who has gained immense popularity among the youth. However, her popularity has waned in recent years, with some critics arguing that she has done little to deliver the transformative government she promised when first elected.

Amid surging Covid-19 cases across the United States, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis is pushing to permanently ban the coronavirus vaccine and face masks in his state. DeSantis, an outspoken Covid-19 skeptic, signed measures in 2021 that made Florida the first state in the country to threaten companies with fines if they required workers to get a Covid-19 vaccine. In addition to proposing a permanent ban on mask and vaccine mandates, DeSantis also wants to prevent doctors from losing their medical license in compromised positions that run counter to the medical consensus. It comes as medical experts have noted a national decline in the numbers of children being vaccinated. Among several reasons, experts say misinformation and disinformation about Covid-19 vaccines may be the seed of doubt about other vaccines.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today again called on Western allies and partners to send more weapons to Ukraine to help fight Russia. Zelensky’s plea comes as the United States prepares to finalize a massive $2.5 billion military aid package for Ukraine that includes a first shipment of Stryker combat vehicles, sources tell CNN. The package is not expected to include tanks or long-range missiles seeking Kyiv. US officials say the Biden administration also plans to provide $125 million in additional energy support for Ukraine. According to Zelensky, the additional weapons are necessary as Russia is likely to launch another series of drone attacks soon.

The Labor Department has accused Amazon of failing to keep warehouse workers safe from workplace hazards at three US facilities. Federal safety regulators issued danger letters regarding the risk of bodily injury from workers lifting packages after examining warehouse facilities in Florida, Illinois and New York. “Each of these inspections found work procedures designed for speed, not safety,” said Doug Park, OSHA assistant secretary. This isn’t the first time the e-commerce giant’s practices have come under scrutiny. A study published last year by a coalition of labor unions found that the rate of serious injuries in 2021 in Amazon US warehouses was twice as high as that in other non-Amazon warehouses.
