This tale kicks off with Joel as society collapses in the outbreak’s terrifying early days, skillfully placing his emotional stakes in an opening that closely mirrors the game. Pascal, with a nuanced performance, exudes anguish at a crucial moment of bewilderment, but also displays a convincing decisiveness and hints of whimsy.
Jumping forward 20 years, we are introduced to a world where the survivors live in totalitarian quarantine zones run by the ruthless remnants of the US military. Their rule is threatened by an unpredictable rebel group known as the Fireflies, with thieves and infected roaming the country.
It’s great to explore, though overwhelming. The first episodes are interspersed with flashbacks that reveal the origins of fascism, an element that was not present in the game. Co-writers Craig Mazin (Creator) and Neil Druckmann (Creative Director of the Game Series) but it will also undoubtedly engage players.
Pascal adds layers of world-weariness to his performance when we return to the seasoned Joel, who has done whatever it takes to survive over the years. He reluctantly takes on the assignment with Ellie, with Pascal and Ramsey’s chemistry gradually emerging as the show patiently builds a bond between them.
Ramsey’s performance unfolds more gradually, displaying more dramatic color as we learn more about Ellie and her sense of wonder becomes palpable. It’s exciting to watch the impressionable teen learn from Joel and the other survivors they meet along their journey, especially with the focus shifting toward Ellie in later episodes.
Infected are used sparingly but stick closely to their gameplay and increase the danger in every encounter. Some of the visual and sound effects in episodes sent to HBO pressings weren’t finalized prior to release, but those scenes were nicely shot and potentially very effective.

Vibrantly, the grim post-apocalyptic saga is peppered with moments of prosperity and hope – mostly delivered by the curious and defiant Eli. This is usually followed by reminders that they’re trapped in a hellish realm, but you’ll definitely join in the first time they laugh together.
Most of the season’s nine episodes focus on this core dynamic, but it also takes some surprising twists to tell more standalone stories. These tales reveal how the characters find space for tenderness and happiness amid horror.
One of these dives into the life of tough survivor Bill, withthe actor Anchoring a part that proves to be the season’s most uplifting and edgy. It greatly expands a story that was only hinted at in the game and stands as a perfect piece of episodic storytelling. You may need to lie down for a bit after watching this.
The second will be familiar to fans of the game, as it reveals a formative moment in Ellie’s past. It’s so much fun watching Ramsey’s dynamic with a character played by Storm Reid (seen ineven if an ominous cloud hangs over every moment.
The score by the game’s original composer Gustavo Santaolalla adds intense melancholy to the narrative, while some pop and rock tracks hint at the world that came before.

Fans will be pleased to see that the adaptation stays very much true to the events of the first game, but there are some clever additions to Ellie and Joel’s core mission.Melanie Lynskey’s new villain gives Kathleen a quiet menace, her presence adding a fresh element to the game’s familiar subplot.
The show also takes the time to reveal never-before-seen moments that will make fans’ jaws drop, along with countless hidden visual easter eggs and a sprinkling of clever cameos.
By contrast, Scott Shepard (of) appears in later episodes where he will surely be remembered by the evil players. His compelling performance establishes a story that sticks tightly to one of the late-game chapters.
HBO’s The Last of Us is an absolute triumph, bringing one of the most intense and engaging gaming narratives to TV viewers and revealing exciting new facets of the universe to those who have played the games. It’s beautifully written and the cast is flawless, with Pascal, Ramsay, and their co-stars adding layers of emotional depth and unsettling moral grayness to every moment.
