LINCOLN – The man who scored Nebraska’s first touchdown in the 2022 season is back on the team for winter training in 2023.
A source on the program confirmed Monday that Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda, who entered the transfer window in October, has withdrawn his name and will participate in spring camp. He left the team after catching five passes for 120 yards, primarily in the season-opening loss to Northwestern. NU removed Garcia-Castaneda from its 2022 roster – a sign of a complete drop out of the program.
That was before one employee. NU coach Matt Rowley’s staff replaced him, and Garcia-Castaneda returned a wide receiver who no longer had record-breaking receiver Trey Palmer, but added two transfers (Baylor Josh Fleck and Virginia Bailey Kemp) and two surprise returns (Garcia Castaneda and Xavier Bates).
García Castaneda moved to Nebraska from New Mexico. He only appeared in four games last season, which, in theory, should count as his redshirt year. He played one year at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif., two years at NMSU — the 2020 COVID year doesn’t count against his watch — and hasn’t technically played a season yet at NU. He could be a fifth-year junior in 2023.
